D1 Memphis is co-owned by Memphis native and the subject of the Oscar-winning film "The Blind Side," Michael Oher. The current Tennessee Titan will make appearances for member events.
"We bring the training, and they bring the therapy. It's an all-encompassing place," said D1 representative Natalie Ewers. D1 Memphis is partnered with adjacent OrthoOne orthopedic medicine clinic. Ortho One, which opened in 2008, will provide physical therapy services within the 20,000-square-foot gym and continue standalone practice with outside clients.
OrthoOne holds exclusivity for the Memphis market if D1 decides to expand further into the Memphis market.
"It's a huge thing for us," said Gail Lindberg with OrthoOne. Lindberg said she does not foresee any staff changes at OrthoOne. D1 Memphis will employ four to six people, according to Ewers.
The opening membership is limited to 200 people. Ewers said she could not speak to how many people have signed up so far. She added that therapy services are processed through individual insurance groups and are not included in the gym membership.
"Hopefully we'll just be in every major city. That'd be ideal," Ewers said regarding the Memphis expansion. "It's a good market, and we found good partners."
