Marketing Monday: Babies and Cars and Beer, Oh My!

2/4/2013

Beyonce, blackout, the Harbaugh brothers coaches, a Ravens win, an almost comeback, and MVP Flacco...there was no shortage of entertainment during last night's Super Bowl XLVII. But the social media buzz today has been centered around the commercials .

Marketers spent some serious dollars during last night's Super Bowl, some up to $4m per spot. Some notable brands included ads by Dodge, Taco Bell, Budwesier and Jeep and others were discussed on social media channels as not worth the money spent, many claiming Go Daddy's Perfect Match as the worst. Upcoming movies Fast and Furious 6, Star Trek and Iron Man 3 were all teased during last night's game. Twitter was abuzz with quick reactions by marketers including Oreo and Chrysler, who scored big with quick comebacks after the lights went out in the Super Dome. A parody account called @SuperBowlLights even popped up within minutes of the blackout.

Of all the commercials, I was personally most impressed by Dodge's "God Made a Farmer". With all the booze and sexuality delivered, Dodge used the late, well-loved Paul Harvey's voiceover from a speech he gave in 1978 at the National FAA Convention to express their appreciation and love of God, local business and family to 100 million viewers. Well done, Dodge. Best ad of the night, maybe ever!
