 Holiday Deli & Ham Co. is moving into the former Bob Evans restaurant in Horn Lake, providing another boost to the city's efforts to fill vacant locations.
The city's Planning Commission recently approved Holiday's application for the site off Goodman Road and Interstate 55. It had been vacant for six years. The building west of Drury Inn at 749 Goodman closed in August 2006. Holiday Deli, which already has four Memphis area locations, is expected to open at the end of October — just in time for the holiday season. "I expect to get a building permit application from them certainly by the end of the month," said Horn Lake planning director Argyle Claxton. "Maybe before then." Before last fall, Horn Lake had two visible holes in its restaurant lineup near I-55. That, however, was aided by Memphis Barbecue Co. moving into the former Roadhouse Grill at 709 DeSoto Cove in December. "It just shows the work that we put in is finally paying off," Horn Lake Mayor Nat Baker said. "Holiday Ham seems to be very committed to making a real good go of a business there." City administrator Andrea Freeze says Horn Lake worked four years with the building's agent in an effort to locate a tenant. Holiday Deli is set to occupy 5,578 square feet on the site of 1.21 acres. "I just think that the timing now is right," she said. "We're very excited to be welcoming them to our business community." One immediate perk, according to Freeze, is that Holiday Deli, like established sit-down restaurants such as Cracker Barrel, serves breakfast. "That's a big thing," she said. "It's going to be a great addition." Added Claxton: "You'll be able to go and eat breakfast, lunch and dinner; you'll be able buy hams and turkeys that they have prepared and they're going to have drive-thru, so you can order ahead and go pick up stuff on the way home." The busy summer of the city's Planning Commission has also included Starbucks acquiring the former Mrs. Winner's Chicken and the construction of dollar stores and Little Caesars farther down Goodman Road.
